Modern Medieval Portraits with Elizabeth St. Hilaire ~ August 24-30, 2026

MODERN MEDIEVAL Portraits
Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime workshop experience with Elizabeth as she guides you in creating a modern, medieval portrait. You’ll take inspiration from incredible medieval frescoes in local churches, combined with the distinct and elegant figures of Tuscan-born artist, Modigliani, as Elizabeth teaches you her exclusive collage techniques. From photographing frescoes and painting papers to gel printing and applying stencils and collage, your unique, modern medieval will emerge.
All levels are welcome on this one-of-a-kind workshop!
OFFERED ONLY IN Tuscany…
Elizabeth’s Modern Medieval Portraits workshop is an all-inclusive experience of fellowship, camaraderie and fun beyond your wildest dreams, that is offered only in Tuscany. You’ll stay in a boutique hotel at the edge of an unspoiled medieval village, and enjoy carefully crafted, daily lessons with Elizabeth. Plus you’ll be immersed in the local cultural, take part in delightful cultural experiences and enjoy exceptional meals.
You’ll enjoy an exclusive visit to the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Città della Pieve, where you’ll have a chance to photograph medieval frescoes up close as inspiration for your unique art project. Blending the sacred symbolism of medieval portraiture with the elongated elegance of Modigliani’s style, the project will unfold as an exploration of mixed-media.
Working over a layered ephemera background, you will learn to sketch stylized faces, incorporating halo iconography with gold leaf for a luminous touch. Next you’ll add richly patterned underpainted clothing, enhance textures with gel-printed papers, and use stenciling and collage to embellish the surface. The final composition will bring together history, portraiture, and personal interpretation.
WHY THE LONG FACE? Modigliani and Medieval Portraiture
Amedeo Modigliani (July 12, 1884 – January 24, 1920) a native of Tuscany, is best known for his unmistakable portraits—elegant, elongated figures with almond eyes and swan-like necks that feel both deeply modern and timeless. But beneath their modernist surface lies an intriguing echo of the past, specifically the quiet dignity and stylized simplicity of medieval portraiture.
Medieval art emphasized symbolism over realism. Figures were often flattened, faces idealized, and gestures restrained, as if to elevate the subject from the earthly to the eternal. Centuries later, Modigliani revived that same visual language, but with a modern twist. He pared down form, streamlined features, and imbued his subjects with an introspective stillness reminiscent of medieval icons.
His portraits have the same frontal, almost sacred presence as those seen in altar panels. The absence of strong shadow, the use of muted backgrounds, are features that harken back to religious paintings of the 13th and 14th centuries. Even his color palette—dusty reds, deep blues, golds—recalls the pigments of medieval frescoes.
Medieval portraits weren’t about capturing a person—they were about capturing a presence. Instead of facial features, identity was often conveyed through clothing, objects, gestures, and inscriptions. It’s fascinating to note how Modigliani revived some of these same elements—elongated bodies, stylized poses, symbolic stillness—but redirected them toward modern psychological exploration.
It’s Modigliani’s artwork, along with medieval frescoes, that form the inspiration for this exciting workshop.

VENUE Boutique Hotel Vannucci
Hotel Vannucci began as a project of Vittoria Spinola, daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele II, who fled Pisa (and an arranged marriage with her elderly husband) to start a new life with her lover in Città della Pieve. Here, she and her soon-to-be new husband, Paolo, built two villas that became luxurious holiday accommodations for wealthy Romans vacationing in the countryside. In 1903 one of the villas became Hotel Vannucci, and today it maintains the elegance and refinement of its inception, with luxurious sleeping rooms, marble bathrooms and inviting gardens. A stay here is truly special, nestled just outside the medieval walls of the historic, and unspoiled, village of Città della Pieve.
