DAY 2: Sorano

  • Sorano’s Etruscan ring walk with Manuele, village of Sorano, visit to Fortezza Orsini, private cantina visit and organic wine tasting
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

MORNING: After a lovely breakfast, featuring seasonal fruits, cheeses and a variety of handmade goodies, it’s off to meet up with your expert Tuscany walking guide, Maneule de Bellis, for a easy-moderate walk along an Etruscan road, near the village of Sorano. Not only an exceptional guide, Manuele’s friendly manner and outgoing personality will put you at ease right from the start, and his passion for his home-region, Tuscany is contagious!

Spectacular rocky outcroppings are a part of the landscape in this part of Tuscany, and the evocative Etruscan vie cave (excavated roads) are nothing short of astounding. This impressive network of ancient roads links a number of necropoli and Etruscan settlements areas – some dating to nearby 3,000 years ago. The winding, trench-like pathways, with walls at times more than 20 feet high, and a purpose that remains shrouded in mystery, provide nature-lovers with one of the most memorable -even sacred – walking experiences that one can have in Tuscany.

LUNCH: We lunch together at a charming trattoria near the castle of Sorano

AFTERNOON: After lunch we pay a visit inside – and outside – the 12th century Fortezza Orsini of the town of Sorano, with sweeping views across the breathtaking, dramatic landscape, unique to this part of Tuscany. Then it’s back to Agriturismo Sant/Egle by van or by foot – the choice is yours.

LATE AFTERNOON: After some free time to rest and relax at the farmhouse, we’re off for a visit to the owners’ organic wine cantina for a private tour and tasting.

EVENING: Dinner at the farmhouse, featuring seasonal, organic specialties

Afterwards you’ll follow the town’s main avenue, lined with enormous plane trees, to a charming park along water’s edge.

LUNCH: Lunch is on your own in Pitigliano

AFTERNOON: This afternoon, after returning to the farmhouse, grab your bathing suit, as we’re off for a short walk to the nearby thermal spa of Sorano, with its mineral-rich, volcanically heated waters that flow at a constant temperature of 98.6ºF and feed two swimming pools – one of which dates back to the 14th century. Of course the ancients had already discovered the secrets of thermal waters, as “salus for aquam” was written at the entrance to the Roman baths: “health from the water” Here you can relax and soak in the thermal pool, as well as arrange a wellness treatment on your own, if you’d like.

Following breakfast at the farmhouse, our private driver will be transporting you to the spectacular Mediterranean coastline where you’ll explore the charming village of Porto San Stefano, situated on a panoramic peninsula with sweeping views across the azure Mediterranean sea. Here you’ll enjoy a scenic walk along the seaside promenade followed by a visit to one of the port’s historic fortresses: Rocca Spagnola Porto Ercole.

LUNCH: Lunch will be served up one of our favorite Mediterranean restaurants and features some of the area’s delectable, regional dishes.

AFTERNOON: In afternoon we’ll continue along the panoramic coastline drive to Convento dei Frati Passionisti, situated at the top of nearby Mt. Argentario. No worries, as the walking is easy, yet the sights – and panoramas – are spectacular.

LUNCH: Lunch is picnic-style, with panini, fruit and other goodies packed up for us by Erika and Alessandro at the farm.

AFTERNOON: After some free time back at the farmhouse, it’s time to don an apron for an oh-so-fun organic, cheese-making class, where you’ll learn how to make making several different kinds of cheese, and sampling is unlimited!

EVENING: This evening after a light aperitivo hour, it’s off by private van to our friend’s “slow food” restaurant for a specially prepared dinner.

DAY 7: Cività di Bagnoregio

  • Scenic valley walk near Cività, visit in historic center, food and wine pairings lesson, pizza making in outside wood oven

Here you’ll enjoy an easy-moderate walk with Manuele from the valley below up to the village itself, followed by free time to explore this delightful, crumbling town on your own.

LUNCH: A light lunch will be served up in our friend’s atmospheric grotto that was once the town’s olive press.

The Unexpected is Part of the Journey: At Strada Toscana we weave amazing, authentic experiences into every trip, but sometimes unexpected things come up. If Mario calls to tell us they’re pressing olives at just this moment, off we go (I mean, we wouldn’t let you miss his newly pressed olive oil!), and if a site has an unscheduled closing, we improvise to include something equally as wonderful and interesting. On that note, if our usual boutique hotels or B&Bs can’t accommodate us (which rarely happens), you can rest assured you’ll stay somewhere of an equal or higher level. The quality of our tours is never at risk, as our team is committed to excellence, along with our vast, local, Italian connections.

WHY CHOOSE a Strada Toscana Tour?

  • YOU’RE NOT JUST A NUMBER. We care deeply about our guests. In fact, we think of our small groups as a kind of family of like-minded travelers.
  • SMALL GROUP – BIG BENEFITS. Our maximum small-group size is 14, which means we’re able to stay in centrally located, boutique hotels (that often have limited rooms), eat in tucked away, family-run restaurants (that are always the best!) and use twin Mercedes Benz vans to reach restricted areas in historic villages.
  • WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK. Our support staff is always at hand to help you with everything from translating a menu to finding that special leather purse.
  • GORGEOUS & COMFY. You stay in upscale, boutique hotels with beautiful sleeping rooms, ensuite bathrooms and lovely touches that reflect the character of the region.
  • BEST VALUE. Because we’re destination experts and operate only in Italy, we know how to get the BEST quality for the very best price – that we then pass along to you. Our tours are an extraordinary value. Period.
  • YOU GET RIGHT TO IT. Spend less time transferring around in vans and more time experiencing. Your accommodations are in ideal locations for stepping outside to walk and explore.
  • PRIVATE DRIVERS. Strada Toscana teams up with exceptional drivers who own their own vans and their own businesses – and are really more like family. No conglomerates and no outside services.
  • AUTHENTICITY. Our trip leaders and guides are locals who are from the areas in which we tour. They know the region, the sites and the people like the back of their hand.
  • EXCEPTIONAL MEALS. The owner-run, top-notch restaurants on our tours are extraordinary, which means you enjoy delectable dinners in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere.
